Chord Chimes

When you strike this instrument’s rods with a hard, lightweight beater, you get a high-pitched, bright, long-sustaining tone. It’s very rich in inharmonic overtones, while the fundamental tone is inaudible. This could make it hard for the ear sort through all the inharmonics and recognize any one among them as the defining pitch, but the instrument is scaled in such a way that one overtone does seem to stand out and provide a sense of pitch. In crowded musical contexts, however, this somewhat tenuous pitch-sense may be lost; thus this instrument works best played sparsely, in an uncrowded musical context.
