THE OTHER SIDE 2 & 3
These two instruments are further developments of an idea initially explored in this earlier instrument. The tines are made from long metal bands mounted on a bridge. A short section of each metal band projects to the front of the bridge, while a greater length extends from the back. It’s the shorter front section that the player plucks, while the longer section provides additional resonance. The two lengths are carefully calibrated so that the longer back section has natural frequencies which respond sympathetically to the frequencies of the front section. Magnetic pickups are positioned where they pick up not the tone of the shorter sections, but the sympathetic resonances in the back sections.
The instrument heard in the audio clip is The Other Side 3.
