Bowed T-Rods

SSS-SP3, SSS-SP8, and SSS-SP16

Sprongle small Each of these three instruments involves small rectangular plates made of spring-tempered steel, rigidly mounted at a single point and positioned so that their vibrations can be picked up by magnetic pickups. They can be sounded in many ways including striking with various types of beaters, edge-scraping or edge-bowing, surface friction with a superball mallet, and tap-press-slide techniques with the corner of a heavy metal cube. A lot goes on in the plates acoustically that is scarcely audible to the naked ear; the pickups bring out the hidden richness.

The instrument heard in the audio clip is SSS-SP8, multitracked.
