5-HULLOO
This is a lap-played instrument. To sound a note, strike one of the open holes with one hand. By striking in different ways you can produce different tones from the same hole. Altogether the five holes produce ten primary pitches plus several additional tones and effects. 5-Hulloo is essentially a multiple udu drum, and it has the distinctive deep udu tone. This tone is partly due to the fact that the vessel functions as a Helmholtz resonator which scarcely supports any overtones, producing instead a saturated fundamental. It also produces the characteristic udu bubble-up effect with certain kinds of strokes.
In the audio clip, 5-Hulloo is joined by cowbell, sleighbells, dual slide whistle and a metronome.
