SPRONGLE-BIG

Sprongle-Big is a tuned set of heavy coil springs held rigidly at the lower end and free to vibrate at the upper end, played by striking from the side. Each of the springs naturally produces a splendid array of frequencies ranging from subsonic to sizzling-high, but the scaling is such that each spring has one frequency which, when the coil is struck the right way, stands out enough to give the tone a recognizable pitch. Magnetic pickups bring out the sound; without them the low frequencies (essential to the pitch-sense) would be scarcely audible.
