Stringtine

SPRINGTIME (also known as STRINGTINE)

Playing the Stringtine

Each of the strings on this instrument is attached at one end to a small steel tine tuned an octave above the string’s fundamental – thus, the tine is tuned to the string’s second harmonic. With this agreement in place the string, when plucked, excites its attached tine as well. The pickups are positioned to listen not directly to the strings, but to the tines. They pick up a peculiar blend of string and tine sound, perhaps better described as string sound as filtered through the octave-tuned tine.
