SPRONGLE-SMALL

Sprongle-Small is a tuned set of lightweight coil springs held rigidly at one end and free to vibrate at the other, played by striking from above. Each of the springs naturally produces a dense array of frequencies ranging from subsonic to very high, but the scaling is such that each spring has one frequency which, when the coil is struck the right way, stands out enough to give the instrument recognizable pitch – that, at least, is the intention. In practice it’s sometimes difficult to recognize a single clear pitch in the complexity of the sound. Each spring has its own little magnetic spot pickup for amplifying the sound.
